RAINBOW PRIDE FLAGS

Use of the rainbow flag, by the gay community, first began in 1978. It first appeared in the San Francisco Gay and Lesbian Freedom Day Parade. SF artist, Gilbert Baker designed the rainbow flag in response to a need for a symbol that could be used year after year. Baker and his volunteers hand-stiched and hand-died two huge prototypes. The flag originally contained 8 stipes: hot pink=sex, red=life, orange=healing, yellow=sun, green=nature, turquoise=art, indigo=harmony, and violet=spirit.

When Baker approached the SF Paramount Flag Co., hot pink was not available commercially. Pink and turquoise were removed and royal blue replaced indigo. It soon became the widely known symbol of gay pride and diversity. It is now officially recognized by the Internatioal Congress of Flag Makers.

The rainbow flag has inspired a wide variety of related flags and symbols.
